SSF2 End of Year Round-up

Festive and seasonal greetings everyone! We hope you’ve enjoyed the holidays and are ready for a spectacular 2026. In this article, we’ll look back on what a year we’ve had and tip the curtains slightly on our plans for next year!

Of course, the biggest hightlight for us was the release of update 1.4 back in May! This release ended the longest period between SSF2 releases, luckily. It was quite an uphill battle for our team, but it makes us all the prouder that we managed to pull it off. I’d like to take this opportunity to once again extend a big personal thanks and share appreciation for all SSF2 team members, who went above and beyond to make this release happen.

Some big headliners of the update were the inclusion of long-awaited veteran fighter King DeDeDe. Swordsmen Lloyd and Meta Knight also got updated, and Goku and Tails got reworked movesets with new animations. Character-wise, almost everyone got some new or reworked animations, or was otherwise touched-up in one way or another. It was a lot of work, but it also really motivated us to keep pushing ourselves as artists to even higher levels.

Stages didn’t shy away from the limelight either. 1.4 was a big step in getting all stages up to standards with fun hazards, beautiful artwork and background cameos cheering you on as you fight.

Though there was of course more, the last feature of the update we want to highlight is addition of Race to the Finish Mode! Fighters run though an unstable subspace to reach the goal in the record time. It’s been an absolute blast to see people race to their hearts content to set the records in our community.

Throughout the entire year, the community has held a variety of tournaments. It’s been heartwarming and a great source of motivation to see players band together to duke it out in SSF2, leading up to the release and after. We saw returning greats such as Just Vibin’, Flash Summit and Royal Court and the cherry on top this year was Platfight Gaming Championships hosting Smash Flash as an online side event this year for the first time.

One of the most interesting developments we saw over the year was an increase in events and participants from the LatAm, Australia, Asia and EU regions. Skilled players from these regions made their debut and likewise new events for these regions specifically were held through the year. We’re looking forward to more highlights from next year!

We hope 2026 will likewise boast fierce competition across the globe. Much thanks to all the community tournament organisers who put in the time and effort to give everyone a stage to compete!

We also want to take this opportunity to thank all content creators in the community for continuing to get word of Smash Flash 2 out there. Before release all the videos kept us going and likewise seeing all videos post-release (such as live reactions) provided much needed payoff for our team. Word-of-mouth is Smash Flash’s primary source of getting new people invested so we deeply appreciate all those that take the time and effort to tell others about the project. Obviously everyone who puts out SSF2 content is near and dear to our heart, but this year we also want to specifically shout out content creators Vollay and Inari whose videos really put the fire in our hearts throughout 2025. We also want to highlight Max Bosch (@GameMarcos39698) for organising and finishing an amazing Smash Flash mural with art from across the entire community (seen below)!

So, what are our plans for ’26? We’ve currently mapped out what we want out of the next update for SSF2. The big difference this time around is that we’ve ‘chopped’ up the tasks into smaller sections (for potentional smaller updates) so we can more steadily work towards our goals instead of trying to fit everything into one bigger release. We want to share the first project that was finished for the next update, as it fits our ideal of SSF2 entering a new era after the release of update 1.4…

Battlefield floats in the skies of the World of Smash. It’s considered quite an honour to fight on this particular stage. Battlefield has been a staple of the Smash Bros. series, with each installement getting a unique take on its visuals. Perhaps this Battlefield is different in some ways?

The Tree of Smash rests behind Battlefield on the vast expanse below. This gentle giant has branches that reach across the endless universe we live in. As all trees do, it absorbs and creates; it absorbs the stories of all these characters and their worlds and produces the creative energy neccesary for fighters to meet and fight in Super Smash Flash 2. Across this plateau countless stories have likely taken place, but now is the time to bring all these characters and match-ups to Battlefield and write your own!

So, what else is in store for SSF2? We’re continuing polish effort on the stages (the stages we’re currently less content with) and balance efforts (Tails buffs and Lucario nerfs, tweaking overly strict timing of jab combos across the board amongst others) as well as adressing outstanding issues (we’ve investigated and adressed issues with Smashville causing desynched matches online, for example). We also intend to keep polishing our character cast with new animations such as heavy item swings, unique back jump animations, sleep animations and various idle flourishes to really bring out the characters’ distincive personalities.

We hope you’ll continue to enjoy and support Smash Flash 2 and our team throughout 2026. From the bottom of our hearts; thank you for an amazing year!!
