Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the original Super Smash Flash! Join us as we commemorate where all our journies began.
20 years ago, budding programmer Cleod9 released the original Flash game onto the internet and into our lives. To this day, many of you still share your stories of the original Smash Flash with us and Cleod. It’s very touching to hear of all the school afternoons spent in the computer lab trying to survive Floating Islands, sliding off of Emerald Hill Zone or engaging in the legendary Mr. Incredible ditto match-up. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that nobody could’ve predicted how far this little Flash game would go.

It’s weirdly nostalgic to think about about the context in which the original game released; the mayhem unleashed by websites like Newgrounds and Armorgames and the peak of internet forums. It was a completely different online world almost!

Not long after the original was released, the idea for Super Smash Flash 2 was born. In many ways, the spirit and ambition of the original game live on in Super Smash Flash 2 today and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

As a special treat to commemorate this occasion, we decided to open source the original Super Smash Flash to Codeberg for all to see:
https://codeberg.org/SmashFlashDevs/SuperSmashFlash
In that repository you will find a time capsule containing the good, the bad, and the ugly inner workings of Cleod’s first major Flash game. Please enjoy!

We hope that in the future you will all continue to share your stories of the Super Smash Flash games with us, that we can continue to be a form of inspiration for people, that we remain a fun starting point for people to get into platform fighting games, and that Super Smash Flash will continue to stay in your hearts as it does in ours!
